Record Store Day 2017 - #RSD2017

Posted: Wednesday 5 April 2017

We’re all music lovers. From Bowie to Stormzy, Joan Jett to Dua Lipa or Nirvana to 5 Seconds of Summer, it’s said that music is a universal language and the 10th annual Record Store Day champions vinyl and freshly pressed records both new and old.

To help celebrate the 10th anniversary of Record Store Day (RSD) on Saturday 22 April, Academy Music Group has teamed up with some independant record stores across the UK to show them the respect and support they deserve, but to also give you a glimpse of what is going on.

Newcastle’s Reflex CD Vinyl are about to simplify your life with their handy list of RSD new releases, which you can download here. It's as easy as printing a copy, highlighting your favourites and bringing it in - they'll then happily help you tick items off your wish list where they can. Nice, aren’t they? We’ve also given them, along with RPM Music and Beatdown Records, tickets to give away for The Cribs, as well as several sets of Hit The North tickets where RSD champions Slaves will be headlining. So, if you’re planning on purchasing a Slaves vinyl, you may just find yourself the lucky owner of a pair of tickets.

Our friends at Rose Red Records are celebrating RSD2017 with live music from Powdered Cows, Harpin’ On and many more bands to be confirmed. Considering our relationship with the store (not to mention their close proximity to O2 Academy Bournemouth) it seemed logical to team up with them for some giveaways. The result? Rose Red ended up very kindly offering us some records which will be up for grabs, so don't forget to follow us on social media for more details.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate the Rega Research/RSD2017 turntables making an appearance this year? These beauties are not only a memento of the 10th anniversary but have actually been signed by various artists, including Jarvis Cocker, Noel Gallagher, Kasabian & many others. Crash Records are among the shops selling these puppies and to make RSD2017 at Crash and Jumbo Records even sweeter, O2 Academy Leeds have sponsored some tickets for giveaways.

Speaking of giveaways, O2 Academy Oxford we’re looking at you! In honour of Truck Store's fabulous goodie bag tradition, we’ve contributed lanyards and ticket vouchers to put in alongside listings and other handouts this year. Be sure to get there before the crack of dawn though, only the first 40 in the queue will get a goodie bag. Regardless of whether you get one or not, Truck Store is a definite go-to on RSD2017 with live performances from Richard Brabin and Kid Kin.

Another stop on the journey to RSD2017 euphoria is Monorail Music, who will be giving away tickets to The Cribs, Snarky Puppy, Toots and the Maytals and many other great acts at O2 Academy Glasgow. O2 Academy Glasgow themselves will also be hosting an Instagram competition alongside O2 ABC Glasgow to celebrate the day, so be sure to keep an eye on their socials for more details - where you could also win a pair of tickets to The Great Escape Festival, as well as a set of tickets to any gig of your choice at one of our Glasgow venues!

What's that? You're in Manchester? WELL to see Mr Thing, Children of Zeus, Gilla, Bobafatt and Swindells live, be sure to pop down to Stage & Radio, where Eastern Bloc Records and First World Records combined forces to bring you an epic RSD2017 party. While you’re hanging around Eastern Bloc, why not pop by Vinyl Revival for your chance to win a guest list spot for either Mark Lanegan or George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic taking place at O2 Ritz Manchester.

The Diskery will have strictly vinyl DJ sets throughout the day, giving you the perfect soundtrack to shop to where they'll also be a pair of Maximo Park tickets up for grabs along with a vinyl from the store! What's that, you want more free tickets? Well, there's also a pair of New Found Glory tickets that will find their way into a local clothing store, so keep an eye on the O2 Academy Birmingham and O2 Institute Birmingham social platforms for more details - where they'll also be a pair of Bat Sabbath tickets pinned in a secret location. All will be revealed on the day via social media.

Bristol's Rise will commemorate the day with live music from Palace, Hannah Lou Clark, The Evil Usses, Fenne Lily, Jonny Velon and The Cheddar Experiment, with DJs playing upstairs throughout the day as you all happily flick through the RSD2017 releases. Hidden in the sleeves, you may even find blue tickets which will correspond to a slot on the house guestlist at O2 Academy Bristol for either Hawkwind, Kate Nash, The Cribs or The Wedding Present: Playing "George Best". These speical blue tickets tickets can be found far and wide at Payback Records, Wanted Records, Idle Hands and Prime Cuts for one of the following shows: Chronixx, Protoje & The Indiggnation, Trojan Soundsystem & Black Roots, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, House of Pain - 25th Anniversary, DJ Shadow or Happy Mondays - 30th Anniversary.

O2 Academy Sheffield will be hosting the epic Renegade Brass Band album launch as the funk, hip hop and soul collective celebrate the release of their brand-new album, Totems
