When someone asks you to think of Newcastle’s newest breakout star, your mind probably thinks of golden guitar boy, Sam Fender, but there’s a pop artist coming straight out of Whitely Bay that you need to keep your eyes on.
L Devine (short for Olivia Devine, that name was taken by a porn star, sadly) is a 22-year-old singer who risked everything for a shot at being a songwriter and thankfully, it’s paid off. Selling most of her belongings in order to move to London, initially she was only interested in becoming a songwriter, but after collaborating with some of pop’s biggest producers, it was quickly realised that she deserved a place in front of the microphone, not behind the scenes.
Before long, in 2017, she dropped her debut EP, Growing Pains, laden with attitude and perfect pop bops, it placed her firmly on the path to pop stardom. Her relatable lyrics, bouncing melodies and effortlessly cool style made her an instant hit with fans and later, the artists she’d previously looked up to.
When recording her follow-up single, ‘Peer Pressure’, the producer played the track to Charli XCX, who loved it so much that she made her own recording of it, but sticking to her guns, L Devine kept the song for herself. 1.5 million streams and counting, it’s become one of Devine’s most popular songs to date and lead to a second EP of the same name and an accompanying short film.
The EP also birthed the track, ‘Daughter’. Showing a softer side to Devine’s writing, she sings of finding her first love and dealing with the homophobia that came with it. It’s not often that pop music talks about same sex relationships and this striking song only further proves why L Devine is an important artist in the new wave pop generation.
She stopped by recently and performed a special acoustic version of 'Daughter', so take a moment to enjoy this delightful take on one of the standout songs of her career so far.
Despite only playing her debut headline (hometown) show in May, the demand for Devine is staggering, with her first show in the capital selling out instantly and its follow-up selling out months in advance. Picked to play both The Great Escape, Radio 1’s Big Weekend and Barn On The Farm this summer, she’s quickly becoming a favourite on the festival circuit as well as in venues and now she’s gearing up for her first ever headline tour in November.
Armed with her saucy new single, ‘Naked Alone’, which was named as Scott Mills’ Tune Of The Week on BBC Radio 1, she’s ready to charge forward and conquer the pop world once and for all. So, if you like your music to have a bit more of an edge, but still want to dance from time to time, then give L Devine a chance, because we’re pretty sure she’ll change your world.
