Beating the competition in the Leicester heats are rockers, Stupid Boots. Scuzz TV presenter and journalist, Matt Stocks caught up with them to talk about how the band started, The Pogues and what we can expect to see from them at The Pogues Irish Whiskey Presents: A Shot at Discovery – The Final on Thursday 27 April.
What band made you want to start a band?
“Bands like The Clash, The Strokes and The Only Ones – they were all big bands for me. I love raw bands and the ones that aren’t perfect. It’s all about the energy. It doesn’t have to be spot on.”
How would you describe Stupid Boots to someone who’s never heard you before?
“Genre-wise, it’s like indie punk with a bit of ‘50s fusion going on. It’s a bit of a mix and match. It’s trashy indie punk goodness with heartfelt lyrics over the top.”
What can we expect from your set at the final?
“Madness. We’re just gonna have fun with. We’ve been practising a lot as well, so it’ll be nice and tight. And we just want to deliver it with as much excitement and fire as we can.”
How will you celebrate if you win?
“We come from Rugby, which is a good two-hour drive and we’re bringing a big 52 seater full of people with us, so I imagine if we do win it’s going to be pretty crazy on the way back up. I don’t think the bus company will be too happy. [Laughs]”
Well good luck. The final question has to be, what’s your favourite song by The Pogues?
“There’s a couple, but I really like Waxie’s Dargle if I had to pick one. I should’ve actually said The Pogues in answer to the first question, because I absolutely love The Pogues. Lyrically, Waxie’s Dargle is basically about Shane asking his mate if he wants to go on the booze for the day, and them both saying they haven’t got any money – it’s just a back and forth conversation of them asking who they can go and borrow money off to go and get pissed. It’s fantastic.”
