International reggae icon Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley is coming to the UK in July for his first solo performances since the release of acclaimed album Stony Hill. This is why you need to be there.
Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley is the youngest son of reggae legend Bob Marley and has been performing since the young age of 13. Committed to continuing his father’s legacy, whilst still retaining his own identity in music, Damian has mastered the art of sticking to his reggae roots, whilst branching out and fusing elements of hip hop, jazz and African musical stylings into his music.
It’s this distinctive sound that has garnered him a reputation as a credible artist, with him being the first reggae musician to win a Grammy award outside of the genre categories, picking up the award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for his song, ‘Welcome To Jamrock’. His album of the same name saw Damian truly make a breakthrough in the mainstream music world, whilst still continuing to grow his dedicated fanbase of reggae lovers.
In the years since the album’s release, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley has collaborated with a handful of well-respected artists, including, Jay-Z, Nas, Gwen Stefani and Cypress Hill, but it was his duet with dubstep champion Skrillex that truly shone a spotlight on his voice. Their single, ‘Make It Bun Dem’ has been certified platinum in the US and became a dominant anthem in clubs across the world.
The arrival of his fourth studio album, Stony Hill was a welcomed return for Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley. His first full-length release in over 10 years, it went on to win him another Grammy, this time for Best Reggae Album. At a time when Caribbean-inspired rhythms are dominating the charts, this was the perfect time to unleash new music into the world and Stony Hill has been soundtracking parties, carnivals and celebrations alike with its light-hearted lyrical content and free-spirited sound.
Bringing it to the UK this summer, fans can expect a performance that’ll honour all aspects of Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley’s career, from his early beginnings right up to the modern anthems he’s so perfectly penned for the flourishing young reggae scene. Whether you want to experience a new generation of the Marley family music, or just want to enjoy dancing along to some of the finest reggae music on offer right now, make sure you’re a part of the Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley tour this summer.
