The Pogues Your Shot: Leicester Heats

Posted: Wednesday 1 February 2017

Following the first round of The Pogues Irish Whiskey Presents: A Shot at Discovery, the regional winners have been announced. Leicester, get to know your finalists...

Jitterz

This punky rock ‘n roll duo describes themselves as the ‘uncoolest band you’ll ever meet’. That may just be up for debate, as their live sets are energetic and sure to pack a punch. Not to mention the songs; prepare to find yourself humming the tunes for days after. Jitterz is a wonderful blend of rock ‘n roll, awkward chats, snazzy shirts and bad dancing.

Warwickshire’s own, Go Primitive are four mates who’ve been pulled together by their passion for music. It may be because of that drive that this alt-rock band’s focus always remains on the creation of their music first and foremost. Combining big guitar riffs with powerful melodies and anthemic choruses to forge a unique sound, Go Primitive have recently released their EP, 100 Ways. They’ve also supported Mallory Knox, The Subways and Lonely The Brave.

Trying to tag The Brandy Thieves with a genre is like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. This five-piece band has instead distilled gypsy rhythms with ska grooves and folk storytelling to produce a sound that’s distinctive. There’s also an energy there that could be associated with punk bands. The Brandy Thieves have shared the stage with the likes of Alabama 3, Skinny Lister and Ferocious Dog.

Hailing from the Midlands, Stupid Boots, have been described as a rare band by Radsound. Mainly because of their musical abilities, despite their young age. This lively quintet blends upbeat indie with punk rock and heartfelt lyrics to boot. Their well-received debut EP enjoyed radio play on Rugby FM and Touch FM, as well as BBC Introducing. If that isn’t enough, Stupid Boots also have a ‘Boots bus’ which brings local fans to their gigs around the country.

Royal Arcade erupted onto the scene in their hometown of Leicester in 2015. Unlike what you’ve come to expect from dream-pop and indie-gaze artists, this band has their fans moshing, crowd surfing and chanting all the way through their sets. Their live shows tend to have a haunting, yet beautiful quality about them.

Describing themselves as "twenty-something chancers chasing the dream", The Jangles may just be able to catch it. With soaring melodies, intertwining guitars sprinkled over a solid rhythm section and great lyrics, the band’s been at it for nearly two years now. That includes playing a number of venues with a back pocket filled with toe-tapping riffs.

Speaking of toe-tapping riffs, find their music on Soundcloud https://soundcloud.com/the-jangles/">here.

After forming in 2012, Flip Like Wilson have shared the stage with heavyweights like ROAM, With The Punches and Neck Deep. The Leicester four-piece also toured around the UK on their headlining 2014 tour, bringing an electrifying energy to the stage. The pop punk band noted they’re a bit DIY when it comes to their music; releasing and recording music and creating their own video content.
