Beating the competition in the Birmingham heats are rockers, Charles Dexter Ward & The Imagineers. Scuzz TV presenter and journalist, Matt Stocks caught up with them to talk about how the band started, The Pogues and what we can expect to see from them at The Pogues Irish Whiskey Presents: A Shot at Discovery – The Final on Thursday 27 April.
What band made you want to start a band?
“I suppose as a kid it was bands like Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones, and from there I got into bands like The Sonics and The 13th Floor Elevators and they made being in a band seem more achievable.”
How would you describe Charles Dexter Ward and the Imagineers to someone who’s never heard you before?
“Someone said in a review of our show once that we sound like Captain Beefheart fighting with The Stooges and John Lee Hooker, and I like that so I’ll always keep saying it."
What can we expect from your set at the final?
“Riff-laden heavy fuzz.”
How will you celebrate if you win?
“We’ll have to wait and see.”
Well good luck. The final question has to be, what’s your favourite song by The Pogues?
“A Pair Of Brown Eyes off Rum, Sodomy and the Lash. I believe it’s about a guy searching for a long lost love, but I just like the imagery, like with all Pogues songs.”
