Venue InformationBack to Top
Academy Music Group launched O2 Academy Oxford on Thursday 20th September 2007, with New Young Pony Club, followed by the Magic Numbers and local heroes, Young Knives to an ecstatic full house each night.
The site of the much respected former Zodiac on Cowley Road was developed over four months to create three separate, flexible performance spaces for live music and club events with a total building capacity of 1,350.
Designed to the highest specification, O2 Academy Oxford attracts a strong calibre of international touring artists due to its larger capacity in the city and technical capabilities.
O2 Academy Oxford, the main venue downstairs, has a maximum capacity of 1,020, and alternative configurations. The secondary venue is the upstairs area of the building, O2 Academy2, with a capacity for up to 436 persons, continuing AMG's policy for encouraging and developing new bands and artists to play in professionally equipped venues.
As well as live music, club nights are a focal point, with regular events from homegrown and national promoters.

The Venue operates a strict 10pm curfew with a club turnaround on Friday and Saturday nights. The house racks and stacks must be used and touring lighting kept to a floor package.
There is a merchandising table house left level with the mix position, a facility fee of 12p/head + VAT is applicable. This does not include a vendor, although with notice this can be arranged.
Security is provided by Showsec International Ltd. and booked through the Venue, please contact the general manager for details, or to discuss any specific security requirements.
Local crew is provided in-house and booked through the venue.
There are 3 dressing rooms, 1 production / promoter’s office, 1 shower and 2 toilets backstage.
Please note there are no laundry facilities available at the venue.
Catering can be set up in Academy 3, it must be loaded out an hour before doors. The venue has 6 trestle tables and 20 folding chairs available for dining. There is a separate area for washing up. Catering power: 2 x 16A & 2 x 13A socket. Any touring catering company wishing to use the venues facilities must fill out and return the ‘Visiting Caterers Agreement’ form available from the technical manager.
Included with the hire of the venue and fixed at a distance of 1.2m is a Mojo-style ‘blow through’ front of stage pit barrier, for audience safety we insist this be used on all standing format shows. The FOH position is also protected with Mojo at the front of the position and at the sides and back by a purpose built barrier.
A parking map can be found HERE. The best route in is via the ring road rather than through town, as you come down Cowley Road you’ll see Manzil Road Gardens to your right just before you see the venue on your left. If you pass the Tesco you’ve gone too far. There is parking for 2 x buses or 1 x truck & 1 x bus. This is a loading bay and cannot be reserved / coned off, therefore we strongly advise arriving overnight to ensure availability. Vehicles parked here will receive a ticket, but this is only £30 if paid promptly.
Load-in is located at street level through a set of double gates, a short push through double doors to the dancefloor then via ramp to stage. There is a fair amount of storage for empty cases, but any extras will need to go back on the truck / trailer. During changeover support acts load gear off the front of the stage in to the pit and out the load-in door to the yard to be packed down outside. There is shelter to prevent equipment getting wet and security to keep an eye on it.
